PACKAGING

We have invested heavily in improvements to our packaging, in order to reduce our impact on the environment and become a more sustainable business. We appreciate there is still a way to go and we are always on the lookout for viable alternatives, but below is a little more information about the materials we are currently using and how to safely dispose of them.

COCOA PAPER TRAYS

Picture
The vast majority of our confectionery is packed (and sometimes baked) in trays made from Cocoa Paper™. These trays are entirely plastic free, fully biodegradable, recyclable and home-compostable.

Cocoa Paper™ is a perfect example of a circular economy: the cocoa shells that are left from the production of chocolate are used to create a paper that biodegrades after use.
The cocoa fibres used for the production of Cocoa Paper™ are certified “OK Compost Home” by TUV Austria.

You can dispose of these trays in your home recycling bin, or break them up and add them to your compost heap.

WRAPPING FILM

Picture
As a wholesale supplier selling primarily to other shops, most of our products are supplied fully wrapped. Since domestic recycling of wrapping films is not currently possible, we have sourced a film that will safely biodegrade in a relatively short space of time, thanks to the addition of Polymateria DegrAid.

Polymateria DegrAid is an additive designed to remain stable until it hits a predetermined time trigger (6-24 months) before breaking down into a harmless wax which is then consumed by microbes in the environment – leading to an output of carbon dioxide and water. Importantly, it leaves no microplastics at the end of the process.
You can put it in your regular household rubbish bin.

TRIANGLE PACKS

Picture
Our sandwiches are packed in triangle cases made from cardboard and film. The cardboard is recyclable, but the film is not. Please separate the film from the cardboard before disposing of them - the film on these packs is designed to be 'easy peel' to make this easier.

Once separated, the cardboard can go in your household recycling. The film can be recycled alongside plastic bags at your local supermarket, or you can put it in your regular rubbish bin.

BREAD BAGS

Picture
Similar to our wrapping film, our bread bags contain an additive to help them degrade more easily. The additive in these bags (DK-100) is not as effective in domestic settings as Polymateria DegrAid, but unfortunately the latter is not available in a bag format.

The bread bags can be recycled alongside plastic bags at your local supermarket (ideally remove the label first if possible). They also make excellent liners for small bins and food waste caddies.

FOIL TRAYS

Picture
Our quiches, pies and tarts are baked in foil trays. These are fully recyclable - give them a wash and then put them in your household recycling bin.

PAPER CASES & LINERS

Picture
A few of our confectionery products have paper cases or liners. You can give them a rinse and leave to dry before adding them to your household recycling bin.

PLASTIC TRAYS

Picture
A very small number of our products are still packed in plastic trays. This is because the Cocoa Paper™ cases we use for everything else are currently only available in very limited shapes and sizes. As soon as the Cocoa Paper™ range is expanded, we plan to switch the cases for these few remaining products too.

The plastic trays are fully recyclable - please rinse them clean and put them in your household recycling bin.

LABELS

Picture
Our labels are made of paper, but the adhesive contains some plastic. As things currently stand, fully plastic-free labels are not financially viable for our products, but we hope this will change.

Our understanding from the manufacturer is that when attached to another recyclable plastic item (such as a plastic bread bag), the labels too can be recycled. However, in large quantities adhesive can make recycling more difficult, so you may prefer to remove the labels before recycling any bread bags they are attached to.

Our packing film will biodegrade regardless of the label, and since we recommend disposing of the film in your regular rubbish bin, there is no need to remove the label from this material beforehand.
